XOXO: El Salvador Finca Atzumpa

Nestled in the UNESCO world heritage Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range, Ahuachapan is the department to first grow coffee in El Salvador with seeds brought from Guatemala in the late 1700’s. The village of Concepción de Ataco has been somewhat of an epicenter for coffee in the country. Finca Atzumpa is part of this legacy with five consecutive generations behind the land’s stewardship.  

Coffee from Atzumpa is processed at the small mill within the farm, which has depulpers, washing equipment, and drying facilities. Most of their yield is almost entirely processed where it is grown, which is relatively unheard of. And the result speaks for itself, having top placement in the El Salvador Cup of Excellence in 2018 and 2019. Yet what enriches this coffee is not just its superlative quality, but the story behind it.  

The proprietary Ariz-Herrera family has brought sustainability, social responsibility, and employment to the communities around the farm for over 100 years. The family worked with others to establish FUNDATACO in 1991, a foundation that helps children from the region join soccer schools and pursue athletic opportunities and scholarships.
