Lemon Crush: El Limoncillo Nicaragua
Lemon Crush is our newest single origin from Nicaragua that’s as delicious as it is delicate. Sweet citrus from the currant and lemon notes sets the stage for this coffee’s natural floral quality to shine. With an ephemeral rose note, Lemon Crush is an elevated coffee that would be delicious served either hot or cold.
Named after the farm on which it was grown, this coffee comes from the nearly 100-year-old El Limoncillo estate – just one of multiple lots in the Fincas Mierisch group. Lemons were once naturally growing on the land before it was developed, lending to the moniker. Today they predominantly cultivate a Red Bourbon varietal acquired from El Salvador in the 1990s.
This lot, comprised entirely of Red Bourbon, was naturally processed and dried on netting atop parchment for more consistent airflow. Despite lower yields and susceptibility to disease, this varietal produces some of the most excellent and approachable cup profiles. Longer, slower drying times allow the humidity to stabilize within the bean, which in turn preserves the bean’s embryo inside.
This intricate level of care at every step takes a lot of work. That’s why El Limoncillo provides daycare services and meals to children in the area, strictly prohibiting the use of child labor. They are also committed to agricultural sustainability by investing in hydro-powered turbines and annually reviewing practices for amelioration. And it’s customers like you that can have a direct impact on their lives, too.
